Good news hiding behind bad

SO I set about taking my gas tank out. I think it is the next thing to be fixed, thought the list is long. Whenever I filled it gas would drip out, from the top of the tank. Was told it happens when they sit, moisture collects on the inside of the top and rusts it out. So I take off the seat and then the panel below...I find the overflow/relief vent (small tube next to fill tube) torn and patched with duct tape.Gas eats stickiness on tape. So I am hoping that is the total leak, though one could be hiding elsewhere.
The thing is how bad the guy I bought it from dooshed me. Either he was straight up lying or knew nothing about the rover.

STARTED

It's been a while, but I got it started and running. We're over a month of non-movement. Biggest thing has been carb and electric. Been playing with the electric, put in an electronic ignition (pertronix). But with out the working carb, never really knew what was up. So this am, (after a let down of Hanna) I took the carb apart. It is a knock off Zenith. Only thing available. Not to say where I bought it from...but, it's floats were screwed up. They were made out of sponge like stuff, and the piece that connects them was bent, so it was constantly flooding the carb, like a faucet. Replaced them with the plastic ones from the old, started!!!!!!!!! Then toyed with the timing (think I got it, may have to bring in some professional help to assure).
There may still be some electrical issuers bouncing around. The front running lights don't seem to work and have to check the brake lights before I go for a ride.
Also looks like an exhaust leak at the exit end of the manifold. But could be a bit of gas that was spilled out of the carb (I waited a good hour or so before spilling gas and starting it, and it's windy).
It's a bright clear day, warm. Going to take the top off and go for a spin when I am sure the brake lights work.
It's been a lousy couple months, so this is a good highlight.
And if I can find my camera I will take some pics.

Pissed

Put a new carburettor in, it leaks gas from one of the butterfly spindle things. So pissed. Leaking gas all over. Won't run. New carb is a piece of poop.

new carb

Started putting the new carb in last thursday, but rain and thunder stopped all of it, got it in this am. Hope it's in right, had to change most of the linkage around. Off to get a new battery and maybe even go out for a ride!!!!!!!!!!!

more trouble

Went out for a spin last night, made it about half a mile when black smoke and sparks and back fires started shooting out the tail pipe. Sad. New carb coming soon. Hopefully that solves some problems.

New lamps, lost the rope

The rope, though cool looking was a bit foolish, so I took it off.
Put on some driving/fog lamps, cause with the headlights in the center, at night to front corners are in the shadows. Not too safe. Ordered the protective grids to keep them from getting smashed.
Still have an electrical issue. I installed a battery kill switch as a temp fix, but can not seem to figure out what the real problem is. Alternator? Starter? I don't know. Every time I look into it I end up pulling out wires that don't do anything. Lots of extra wires.
New carb should be coming tomorrow. After that and the wiring, taking a look at the laking gas tank.
Wallace wants to go for a ride, but he's too mental, would jump out the side.

Every where I take it people love it. Good good.

Oil Leak

I have a fairly good flowing oil leak on my front left wheel. It does not appear to be coming from the swivel joint, but from between the swivel joint housing and the break anchor plate.
It is dripping down where the shine is in the first picture, close up in the second.
If anyone out there has seen this before please contact me.
Thanks

So Far

Have driven about 40 miles, little trips. Everyone seems to love it. Lots of compliments and stories of other people's dream cars.

Issues to resolve:
Copious oil leak on front left something or other behind the wheel
Transmission twice popped out of third gear
Runs rich, bit smoky on start up
Need belts for the back benches

Would like to get:
Hardtop, specially the Ex-Panda
Winch (maybe two)
Fog lights/some more lights

Would also like to figure out what the switches are for on the dash. I was told this was a rebuilt by the head mechanic at the Ashville, NC Land Rover dealership.

Hey look, I'm an electrician

So I picked up my 1964 Land Rover Series IIa yesterday. The mechanic who picked it up for me couldn't get it started. I think he was afraid of damaging it more than not knowing what to do.
First problems: electrical. Trouble with the rear left blinker (turn signal). Messed about with the connections on the rear of the truck for half an hour, got them going when they should. (as I was messing about I managed to get the break lights to work with the blinkers, close but no cigar)
Then the running lights didn't work. This happened once when I test drove it, then they came on all by them selves when I was standing next to the truck. Removed the dash panel and there was a loose connection.

I bought the big green Land Rover Series II & IIa Repair Manual. Nice.

Here she is

I like it. So does my daughter. Coolest truck in town, most likely. Bit nervy about the right hand drive. Couple wiring issues to toy with.
Gotta finish the garage.
